10. Cecil
Cecil is the main character of Final Fantasy 4, originally released in the US as Final Fantasy 2 for the Super Nintendo. Cecil starts out the game as a bad ass dark knight, but has to undergo a transformation to a paladin to fight the true enemy. It’s too bad, really, because his first form is much cooler.
9. Vivi
Vivi is the black mage in Final Fantasy 9 for the Playstation. Though his small stature may fool you, he is one of the strongest characters in the game, and is a mainstay in the party. His throwback visage is derived from the first title in the series, and is likely one of the reasons he appeals to so many FF fans.
8. Cait Sith
Cait Sith is a cat that tells fortunes and rides around on a huge stuffed moogle. He forces your way into your party upon meeting you, and he is unavoidable if you want to continue the story. Fortunately, he’s a cool character that is fun to use. Similar to Setzer in Final Fantasy 6, Cait Sith’s attacks are based largely on chance. For example, his limit breaks include a dice attack that does damage depending on the roll, and of course, a slot machine based attack with different effects for different combinations.
7. Zidane
Zidane, the main character from Final Fantasy 9, has a tail. He’s a lot less serious than previous main characters, specifically Cloud and Squall. A thief who falls in love with a princess after kidnapping her. His style differs immensely from the aforementioned “play hard to get” brothers, but in typical Final Fantasy fashion, he still ends up with the girl.
6. Mog
“Human-loving, fast-talking, street-smart, SLAM-dancing… Moogle…” Mog was the first playable moogle in the series and was a force in battle. His dancing skills allowed him to eliminate entire fleets of enemies. He is used, along with 10 of his moogle brethren, in the games first group battle, where you switch parties on the fly and defend the game’s main character. Unfortunately he doesn’t join you at this point, but once you get him to join the party, he picks up right where he left off.
5. Squall
The emo protagonist of Final Fantasy 8, Squall’s saving grace is his weapon. Is it a sword? Is it a gun? It’s both. The timing-based trigger added damage to your attacks and his limit break was largely based on timing as well. He has a huge convoluted back story, not unlike Cloud, which takes a little to grasp. If he wasn’t a powerhouse in battle, he wouldn’t even be on this list, however he is one of the only consistent damage dealers in the game.
4. Kain
Kain is a dragoon, a special kind of knight who wield spears. The dragoon’s special move allows them to jump in the air for a while in battle, avoid all attacks in that timeframe, and then unleash a diving attack with their spear. Kain coupled with Cecil as a dark knight in Final Fantasy 4 made a dynamic duo that makes the beginning of the game somewhat of a breeze. Things, however, change soon when the pair are split up following an earthquake. Kain could have made this list based solely on his sweet attire.
3. Locke
The second thief on this list, though he’d prefer to be called a “treasure hunter”, Locke is featured early on in Final Fantasy 6 after rescuing Terra from the evil empire. His steal ability nabs you a lot of great equipment over the course of the game, so it’s almost obligatory to keep him in your party. Locke is the first member of the Returners, a rebel group committed to overthrowing the tyrannical rulers of the land, that you meet in your long journey to save the planet from the maniacal Kefka.
2. Cloud
Whether it’s his gravity-defying hair or his near-comically oversized sword that makes him such a hit, Cloud possesses the star power that transformed Final Fantasy into one of the most recognized franchises in video game history. We originally had Cloud at 1, in order to prevent fanboy backlash, but we were told we have no backbone, so in typical non-backbone-having fashion, we’ll switch up our list to appease our readers.
1. Sabin
Sabin is arguably the strongest character in Final Fantasy 6. When you first get him to join your party, he has at least 100 more hit points than the next guy. His blitz skills allow him to combine martial arts, wrestling skills, and magic into devastating attacks. Nobody can deal damage on his level until mid game, and he learns the best multi-target attack you will have for a while at a fairly low level. Sabin is a blast to use because his blitz attacks rely on button presses to perform. His first attack is a simple left, right, left on the D-pad, but later you’ll be rotating half and full circles like you’re playing as Zangief in Street Fighter. Sabin gets major points for being able to equip claws.
Honorable Mentions: Rinoa, Seifer, Terra, Shadow, Auron, Tifa, Aeris
Why is there no Tidus?
This list is very disagreeable. Why are Biggs, Cid, and Wedge not on this list?
Maybe… you just put Sabin on the 1st because you like him best… i mean there are lots of monks in final fantasy… and the other guy is true why is there no tidus???
Squall is not emo!
SEphiroth!!!!!!!!
Don’t Tidus me, bro.
[...] 4. Final Fantasy VI (Super Nintendo) The game’s story focuses on a group of rebels as they seek to overthrow an imperial dictatorship. Final Fantasy VI was the first game in the series to be directed by someone other than producer and series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. Final Fantasy VI has more battle customization options than its predecessors and has the largest playable cast in the Final Fantasy series to date, excluding spin-off titles. It remains widely praised for its storyline and characters, 3 of which made our Top 10 Final Fantasy Characters list. [...]
