The top 10 worst video games of all time presented by http://videogamelists.com

The top 10 worst video games of all time presented to you by http://videogamelists.com. They span all consoles and all years. A game has to be REALLY bad to make this list. Hopefully you have never had the chance to play any of these games. And now for the moment you all have been waiting for… The top 10 worst video games of all time……

10. Hannah Montana: The Movie (PS3, Xbox360, Wii)-

Most people won’t jump out to buy or play this game, but seriously this game should not be played by anyone, even a young girl that loves Hannah Montana. It’s a cheap, awkward, boring, and embarrassing attempt to cash in on the hype of the movie with no attempt to make it into an actual fun game. The same goes for this version of the game on any game console system.

9. Pac-Man (Atari 2600) -

Nothing about this version of Pac-Man, sounded, or felt the same as the arcade version. Even Pac-Man himself didn’t have his normal look going, and his trademark “wakka wakka wakka” had become a “bonk bonk bonk.” The ghosts shimmered in and out of existence, owing to the 2600’s limited graphics capabilities. What should have been little white power pellets looked like stale Twinkies. This didn’t stop them from releasing this game and torturing the true Pac-Man fans.

8. Homie Rollerz (Nintendo DS) -

A fast paced arcade racer that combines the Homies attitude with the gameplay of popular racers like Mario Kart. With a description like that how can it be bad? Poor controls, midi music, terrible graphics, no fun whatsoever, and, oh yeah, the game is also practically impossible to beat. How can a game like that not be bad? The developers tried to cash in for a quick buck, but hopefully not too many people were fooled into purchasing this.

7. Total Recall (Nintendo Entertainment System) -

Before he became the Governor of California, Arnold was quite the movie star with even his own video game based off the file Total Recall. Arnold went from gunfight to gunfight surrounded by horrible mutants and explosives in the movie, yet none of that could translate into the game. Instead of that, it looks the game decided to come up with its own “better” Total Recall plot. Talk about trying to cash in on a movie title.

6. Superman (Nintendo 64) -

One of the most dull and boring games you can play. You spend almost the entire game performing whatever demeaning tricks Lex Luthor demands. Superman has to fly through 75 hoops in one minute or die! Followed by Superman needs to fly through 75 more hoops or die. With all these cool super powers you would have thought they could have gave Superman something more interesting to do in this game.

5. Bible Adventures (Nintendo Entertainment System) -

Here is an example of how terrible this game is. In Noah’s Ark, you play the part of Noah hunting down and subduing unwilling animals by hitting them on the head with a vegetable. Or in Baby Moses there’s no consequence for drowning Baby Moses. You can go back to the beginning of the level and get a new baby any time you want. I can’t believe they were able to release this, where was religious protesters back then?

4. Rap Jam: Volume One (Super Nintendo) -

The most tragic thing about Rap Jam is this: they put “Volume 1″ right in the title as if anyone would want to play an entire series of sports games starring people who don’t know how to play them. The graphics are terrible and the rappers don’t even look like them during the gameplay, and speaking of the gameplay.. There is no fun aspect to it at all. As with most these games the question arises, what the heck were they thinking?

3. E.T The Extraterrestrial (Atari 2600) -

When you only have 6 weeks to make a game, you can’t expect a classic, but this is ridiculous. Most of the gameplay was E.T. trying to escape from scientists and jumping into pits to find parts of his telephone. If there was no chunk of telephone in the pit, which was only the case in 97% of them, you could leave by stretching out ET’s neck until he slowly, SLOWLY floated up. You have a fraction of a second window to immediately stop making ET’s head stretch. If you miss it, he’ll fall right back in and you have to start the floating process all over. Does that make you want to try it?

2. Shaq-Fu (Sega Genesis) -

Who came up with the idea to give Shaq a fighting game? I also wonder who agreed it’d be a good idea for a game? This game is plagued by poor hit detection, a plot and dialogue that is beyond cheesy, and well it’s just not fun at all. But hey, if you got the Sega Genesis version you got 5 more crappy characters in the game! Rumor has it on Wikipedia that Shaqfu.com is dedicated to collecting every copy of Shaq Fu by buying the game from anyone who owns it and destroying it.

1. Bubsy 3D (Playstation) -

Why is Bubsy 3D #1 you may wonder? They took a cool 2D game and totally ruined it trying to make it into 3D. The game is fully 3D, but Bubsy can’t really move any direction other than straight. Getting at an item across the room can take up to 10 minutes of walking in a line, slowly rotating, then walking in a line and slowly rotating. The whole game is torture and I tip my hat to anyone who was able to play this until the end. Thankfully this was the only 3D variation they made of this game.

12. Gilgamesh (FF5)
Gilgamesh is a recurring character in the series, but he made his debut in Final Fantasy 5 as the main boss, Exdeath’s, right hand man. The main characters run into Gilgamesh a total of 6 times in the game, and all the genji equipment can be stolen from him. Eventually, Exdeath sends him into the void for repeatedly failing to defeat Bartz and the other characters, where he has a change of heart. The party runs into him again and he attacks them, mistaking them for monsters, but he eventually ends up helping them defeat one of the final bosses.

11. Yu Yevon (FF10)
Yu Yevon is a jerk summoner that is responsible for Sin, the giant jerk that has been destroying civilizations for 1,000 years. Yu Yevon isn’t a cool boss, and he’s not prominent in the game, but he is particularly villainous for being responsible for the mess of a game that Final Fantasy 10 was, and that’s enough to put him on this list.

10. Ultimecia (FF8)
Ultimecia is a sorceress from the future, bent on combining all time periods into one, because that sounds like a great idea. She sends her consciousness back in time, and takes control of Edea, then Rinoa, then Adel. The party eventually travels to Ultimecia’s time to destroy her. As time returns back to normal, Ultimecia finds her way to Edea, possessing her, and restarts the chain of events that leads to her ultimate defeat.

9. Rufus Shinra (FF7)
The son and eventual successor to President Shinra, Rufus is even more diabolical than his father. He was the main financier for the rebel group AVALANCHE, because he wanted to see his father taken out, so he could have control of Shinra Corporation himself. He eventually gets his wish, as President Shinra is killed by Sephiroth acting through Jenova. When first encountered by Cloud, Rufus proclaims that he will rule by fear, instead of ruling by money which his father did.

8. Garland (FF9)
The creator of Kuja and Zidane, Garland is directly responsible for the events in the game. He was created by the Terrans and given the task to find a new planet for them to live on. When he couldn’t conquer Gaia, he created Kuja to be his Angel of Death, killing Gaians to make room for the Terrans’ souls. Kuja eventually sends Garland to his death, but afterwards, a formless Garland reveals Kuja’s mortality, which sends Kuja over the edge.

7. Professor Hojo (FF7)
Professor Hojo is a sick individual that is mostly responsible for all the events in Final Fantasy 7. He injects his son with Jenova cells while he is still in the womb. This son ends up being Sephiroth. He ends up shooting Vincent Valentine over his objection to Hojo’s experiments on humans and leaving him in a coffin after conducting experiments on his body. He also performs tests on unwilling subjects including Cloud, creating more than a handful of failed Sephiroth copies. The party eventually encounters him in Midgar, where he injects himself with Jenova cells, turning himself into a powerful monster that is ultimately defeated by Cloud and Co.

6. Ultros (FF3/6j)
Ultros is a comedic octopus enemy that the party encounters multiple times in Final Fantasy 6. The party first defeats him on a raft, causing Ultros to invest his time in paying the returners back. He runs into the party at the opera house and tries to drop a 2-ton weight on Celes, but is promptly defeated. The best encounter comes after this, when the returners run into Ultros in the Esper Cave trying to steal the Warring Triad statues. During battle, Relm shows up and paints Ultros’ portrait, leading to his statement, “I’m nothing but a…stupid octopus!”

5. ExDeath (FF5)
Exdeath was a tree that housed evil souls, until the souls made the tree so self-aware it took on a human form. Exdeath was originally sealed by Bartz’s father along with the other warriors of dawn, however he manages to break the crystals that seal his power, and he rises to terrorize the world again. He eventually takes control of the void and returns to his form as a tree, before being beaten and consumed by the void. After this, he turns into Neo-Exdeath, whose sole purpose is to erase existence.

4. Zemus (FF2/4j)
Though Golbez is the main antagonist through most of Final Fantasy 4, the party eventually learns he is being controlled by a more sinister being known as Zemus. Zemus is a Lunarian who wants to conquer Earth. He was sealed away by the other Lunarians, who longed for coexistence with the inhabitants of Earth, but his psychic powers allowed him to reach out to the two characters on Earth with Lunarian blood, Cecil and Golbez. When Golbez is released from Zemus’ power, he kills him along with help from FuSoYa, however this just unlocks his ultimate form: Zeromus.

3. Kuja (FF9)
Kuja is a genome created by Garland to kill Gaians and speed up the process of the Lifa Tree. His early goal is to harness the power of the eidolons to defeat Garland and conquer Terra for himself, however this plan changes after he learns that he is a mere mortal. His next goal is much greater, as he wants to eradicate all life, with the justification, “Why should the world exist without me? That wouldn’t be fair. If I die, we all die!” After Kuja’s final defeat, the party encounters the final boss, Necron, who is a being awakened by Kuja’s fear, despair, and hatred.

2. Sephiroth (FF7)
Sephiroth is the son of Professor Hojo and Lucrecia, given superhuman strength due to being injected with Jenova cells before birth. He was an accomplished SOLDIER until coming across Shinra research about his creation, whSephiroth, Kefka, Kuja, Zemus, Exdeath, Ultros, Professor Hojo, Garland, Rufus Shinra, Ultimecia, Yu Yevon, Gilgameshich drove him to madness. He thinks that Jenova is his mother and was one of the Cetra, as did Shinra, which would make him the last surviving Ancient. This causes Sephiroth to believe that he is better than humans. Sephiroth eventually manages to control Jenova’s body, killing a bunch of people in effort to find the black materia which would summon the ultimate spell, “meteor”, to destroy the planet. He may be the most popular Final Fantasy baddy, but the top spot on our list belongs to:

1. Kefka (FF3/6j)
Ahh, Kefka. While Sephiroth was driven mad when he learned he was the result of a scientific experiment, Kefka is just flat out crazy. Kefka derives joy in causing chaos and pain. Kefka’s first awesome display of insanity is when he poisons the water supply of Doma, effectively ravaging the entire nation. After this he learns how to harness the power of magicite and kills almost all the remaining espers to turn them into magicite, making himself even more powerful. Kefka overthrows Emperor Gestahl, takes control of the Warring Triad, and becomes the God of magic, changing the entire face of the planet. Kefka rules from his newly built castle, leveling entire towns that oppose him. Eventually, the party catches up with Kefka and manages to destroy him, but not before he could cement his legacy as best Final Fantasy villain of all time. Thanks for reading, we’ll leave you with one of Kefka’s elegant quotes:

“I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate HATE YOU!”

Socks, the pet cat of President Bill Clinton, must get to the Oval Office to warn the president about a stolen nuclear bomb. To do that, he must defeat villains including Russian spies, the press corps, and former presidents Richard Nixon and George H.W. Bush.

Bill Laimbeer’s Combat Basketball (1991 Super Nintendo)
Basketball is supposed to be a non-contact sport. Not the way Laimbeer played it. As a Detroit Piston in the 1980s, he was well-known for frequent flagrant fouls and starting fights on the court. His notoriety led to this futuristic basketball game in which players punch, kick, push, and throw bombs at each other.

Michael Jackson’s Moon Walker (1990 Sega Genesis)
A drug dealer named Mr. Big has kidnapped some children and takes them to the Moon, where he plans to use a laser cannon to destroy the Earth. As Michael Jackson, you have to defeat Mr. Big and his cronies by using dance moves that shoot “magic rays.”

Toilet Kids (1992 Turbo Graphics 16)
A little kid gets up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and is sucked through the toilet into another dimension populated by creatures who look like bathroom fixtures. The Toilet Kid must then battle with tough toilet bodyguards and an evil giant urinal.

Parappa The Rapper (1996 Playstation)
PaRappa the Rapper was something of a sensation, mainly because it was so weird and nobody knew what the hell to make of it. Featuring the cartoons of artist Rodney Greenblat, PaRappa was a paper-thin rapping dog that went on a quest to learn more and more raps in order to impress a really hot flower named Sunny Funny. He hung out with other talking animals and learned raps from an onion with a black belt, a frog at the flea market and an Italian moose dictator named Mooselini. At one point, PaRappa had to out rap his mentors to see who got to use a truck stop bathroom first. It was bizarre as all get out, but had copious amounts of WTF! charm.

Face Training (2007 Nintendo DS)
Face Training is based on the principles of “facening,” or facial yoga, which aims to exercise the facial muscles to improve tone and therefore appearance. The game ships with a camera peripheral, which slots into slot two, and ends up on the right-hand side of the handheld because it is held in “book” view to play. The camera enables you to see your own face on the right-hand screen, alongside the instructions on the left.

Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure (1995 Sega Genesis/Super Nintendo)
Adventure as a caped hero who slings his own boogers to vanquish his foes. The hero of the game is a booger-tossing, noisily burping, fart-spewing man named Snotty Ragsdale. While he lives his normal life as an eccentric millionaire, his natural “in-stinks” come in handy when he dons the mask of the smelly hero Boogerman.

ToeJam and Earl (1991 Sega Genesis)
It centers on the titular ToeJam and Earl—extraterrestrials who have crash-landed on Earth—as they attempt to escape the planet. Players assume the role of either character and collect pieces of their wrecked spacecraft. ToeJam wears a large gold medallion and a backwards baseball cap, while Earl is marked by high-tops and oversized sunglasses; both outfits are “over-the-top appropriations” of 1990s urban culture.

Katamari Damacy (2004 Playstation 2)
The game’s plot concerns a diminutive prince on a mission to rebuild the stars, constellations and Moon, which were accidentally destroyed by his father, the King of All Cosmos. This is achieved by rolling a magical, highly adhesive ball called a katamari around various locations, collecting increasingly larger objects, ranging from thumbtacks to people to mountains, until the ball has grown large enough to become a star.

Shadow of the Colossus (2005 Playstation 2)
In a dramatic twist of the usual stuff you’d find in a game against giant stone creatures, you’re essentially running around an empty land. Incredibly lush and detailed, but an empty land nonetheless. That fact alone makes this game a really odd one to get used to at first, as you essentially have nothing to do for long periods of time but run around on your horse. And the craziest part? That doesn’t even get boring.

10. Mega Man X (1993)-
The re-imagining of the Mega Man series turned out to be one of the best games in the series. The character detail in this game is top-notch and represents a huge step up from the 8-bit Mega Man we had come to know. Everything from the series is back: The mega buster, 8 bosses, the collectible enemy weapons, but the additions are what set this game apart from its predecessors. Mega Man can’t slide, but he can dash as well as jump up walls. In lieu of robot bosses with names like “Crash Man” or “Gemini Man” you have animal-themed robot bosses like “Frost Penguin” and “Spark Mandrill”. When you acquire one of the hidden upgrades, you can now charge the weapons you gain from the bosses. This wonderful game has spawned 7 sequels, and rumor is that Mega Man X9 will be made sooner or later.

9. Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers (1994)-
The 3rd of 4 Street Fighter games to hit the SNES, Super Street Fighter 2 built on the success of the previous 2 games, while managing to add 4 more characters to the roster, bringing the amount of characters at your disposal to 16. If Fei Long, Cammy, T. Hawk, or Dee Jay aren’t you thing, don’t worry, the veteran characters received some changes. Most notably, Ryu now has the ability to throw a fireball that will cause his opponent to catch fire, while Ken, on the other hand, can set his opponent on fire with his fierce dragon punch. Another great new feature that adds to the 2 player fun is the Group Battle mode, where you can choose up to an 8-man team to battle your opponent in consecutive rounds until one man runs out of characters. All the Street Fighter titles on the Super Nintendo are great, but its additions make SSF2 stands out from the rest.

8. Final Fantasy 2 (4j) (1991)-
The first Final Fantasy game for a console other than the NES is a great one. Final Fantasy 2 (Final Fantasy 4 in Japan, as Final Fantasy 2 and 3 weren’t released here, Final Fantasy 4 and 6 were renamed 2 and 3 as to not confuse American gamers) is famous for introducing the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, where, instead of taking turns battling with the enemy, your characters have a meter that fills over time, and only when the meter is full can your character act. This revolutionary battle system would go on to be used in many Final Fantasy titles, as well as other RPGs. With a gripping story and a quest that spans over 3 different worlds, Final Fantasy 2 is a memorable adventure that set the bar for future Final Fantasy titles.

7. Super Mario RPG (1996)-
The year is 1996. Game developers Nintendo and Squaresoft team up, using the bread and butter of each company to create a hybrid title that has yet to be matched. Nintendo offered up their mascot, the legendary Super Mario. Squaresoft offered up a decade’s worth of spectacular role-playing games under their belt. Super Mario RPG was a strange idea turned into a complete masterpiece. The soundtrack is never boring. The story, while being slightly cheesy, was more than passable. The battles were amazing, with a turn-based system being infused with button-timing to maximize attack damage. The character lineup, though small with 5 players to choose from at the end, is more than satisfying, with 2 whole new characters joining mario, as well as Princess Toadstool and even Bowser himself, whose castle is invaded by the true boss of the game. Since Super Mario RPG, Nintendo has been trying to recapture the magic with the handheld Mario & Luigi titles and the console series, Paper Mario, but this game still shines above them all.

6. Super Metroid (1994)-
The long-awaited true sequel (the Game Boy one doesn’t count) to Metroid was well worth the delay. Super Metroid fixes nearly every annoyance from the first Metroid, while retaining the classic run-and-gun gameplay that made Metroid a standout. The biggest additions are the world map that helps immensely in the backtrack-quests that are necessary to complete the game, and the ability to save your game at certain points, affording the ability to turn off the game without losing all your progress. Once again, the story has Samus Aran fighting space pirates to reach the ultimate goal of defeating Ridley, the leader of the Space Pirates, and Mother Brain, the brains behind the operation (pun intended). With an astounding 96% rating on Gamerankings, Super Metroid is the 19th best-ranked game according to that site, and is a treat for any of those lucky enough to play it.

5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1992)-
After the public’s reaction to Zelda 2 (full-scale riots, boycotts, and hunger strikes might only be a slight exaggeration), Nintendo went back to the top-down basics that caused so many to fall in love with the little guy in green in the first place. A Link to the Past has the distinction of being one of the first games that allows you to unlock a completely new version of the world you had just explored. The aptly titled “dark world” has anthropomorphic rabbits, evil villages, and frozen lakes. Link’s inventory in this game is massive, including the debut-item that has been included in some form in almost all Zelda games since, the hookshot. The adventure to unlock the Master Sword and use it to save the 8 maidens from the clutches of the evil Ganon is a memorable one, and the debate is still out as to whether this game or Ocarina of Time is the best in the series.

4. Secret of Mana (1993)-
Secret of Mana puts you in the shoes of an orphaned boy who gets lost in the woods while goofing off with his orphan brothers, only to come across a sword that talks to him that he needs to take in order to cut some bushes down to reach his village. Unbeknownst to the boy, however, is that this sword was sealing away evil monsters that were released around the world when the sword was pulled from its stone. When you get back to the village, everyone is mad at you for causing monsters to appear, leading to the decision to exile you from the village. You find out that the sword you took is the Mana Sword and you start off on a sweet adventure to kill a bunch of monsters, since that’s what you do when you get a sword. Along the way you meet a girl and a sprite, who help you in your quest to find out what the deal is. You get more weapons as you go along (spear, boomerang, axe, etc) and your party mates learn magic to help you out. The perfect blend of Zelda inspired hack-and-slash gameplay and Final Fantasy-like RPG elements, Secret of Mana is truly unforgettable. Also, (!SPOILERS!) The Secret of Mana is that she’s a tree…and she’s your mother. Go figure. (!SPOILERS!)

3. Super Mario World (1991)-
The first of few launch titles for the Super Nintendo (It was a pack-in with the system in the US), Super Mario World was the first foray into 16-bit gaming for most. It’s hard to believe they could improve that much on Super Mario Bros. 3, which had been released only a year earlier, but Nintendo managed it, creating one of the best platformers of all time. Super Mario World retained the world map from Super Mario 3, as well as the boss fights against Bowser’s children. New features included Yoshi, the lovable dinosaur that Mario could ride; alternate exits to levels, revealing different paths and different worlds on the map; and the cape, which allowed Mario to fly on a much less limited basis than the racoon suit from SMB3. Super Mario World set the bar for all platformers to come on the SNES, and it would be hard to say any of the platformers that came after it were any better.

2. Final Fantasy 3 (6j) (1994)-
The last game in the series before the uber-popular Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 3 (Final Fantasy 6 in Japan) features one of the most diverse casts, with playable characters ranging from humans, to moogles, to sasquatches. The world of FF3 is one in which few magic users dwell, thus placing a commodity on the ability to harness this power, with the main antagonist trying to gain it for the purpose of world domination. Final Fantasy 3 was unique for the fact that your characters all had their own special movesets. For example, Edgar can use tools in battle with a range of effects while Sabin learns martial art moves that are performed by entering a certain button combination. While most would point to Final Fantasy 7 as the best game in the series, you can find more than a handful of people who consider this game tops.

1. Chrono Trigger (1995)-
A time-travelling adventure like none other, Chrono Trigger has the player guide their party from the beggining to the end of time. A truly revolutionary game, Chrono Trigger also features multiple endings (over 10), increasing its replay value immensely. On the surface, the battle system is that of Final Fantasy titles from that day, however, key differences that make the battles stand out are the fact that the enemy moves around the screen so certain attacks only work when the enemy is positioned right, and the double and triple techs, which allow you to team up with another character or characters to deliver a myriad of fierce attacks that typically deal greater damage than single attacks. An epic storyline with a great plot twist that has the player realize the enemy they have been seeking out is not the evil force that causes world destruction in the future provides a sturdy backbone for this gem of a game, the greatest title to grace the Super Nintendo.

Honorable Mentions: Donkey Kong Country, Breath of Fire 2, Secret of Evermore, Contra 3, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario Kart

10. Double Dragon (1988) -
Double Dragon had it all: Jump kicks, nunchucks, purple-headed women that attack you with whips, big bald bosses named Abobo. Sure, the NES version doesn’t include 2-player cooperative gameplay (For some god-awful reason. There is a 2-player mode in the main game, but you take turns instead of fighting simultaneously, and a 2-player competitive mode that consists of fighting in an enclosed area, but it’s not very fun or memorable.), but that doesn’t prevent this game from being one of the funnest that the NES had to offer. Double Dragon follows Billy Lee (and his brother Jimmy in the original) on his journey to save his girlfriend from the gang that kidnapped her. What follows is 4 missions that take place in a variety of settings, ultimately leading to a face off with the people who took your girlfriend. Double Dragon defined the beat ‘em up genre and that alone is enough to land it on this list.

9. Bionic Commando (1988) -
Bionic Commando is possibly the most underrated game to grace Nintendo’s first console. Up to this point, gamers had come to understand that side-scrolling platformers offered you the luxury of jumping to traverse pits and reach higher ground, but Bionic Commando throws that out the window in lieu of a bionic grappling arm that allows you to swing across gaps and climb up platforms, all while you use your trusty gun to slay Nazi’s (well, they were Nazi’s in the Japanese version, but all Nazi references were taken out of the game when it was localized) in an attempt to rescue a special commando who was captured by the enemy, Super Joe, and foil the plot to resurrect the ultimate bad guy in history, Adolf Hitler (Named Master-D in the American version). While the grappling arm gives Bionic Commando a steeper learning curve compared to traditional platformers of the day, once you get used to it, you will no longer lament the lack of a jump button as you fly through the skies like Spiderman in fatigues.

8. Castlevania 2 (1988) -
Probably the most highly debated game on the system, Castlevania 2 is a love-it-or-hate-it title. The debate over the game was further polarized by the review of the game offered up by the stupid angry video game nerd, formerly known as the angry nintendo nerd, soon to be the artist formerly known as nerd, or “Ñ”. In his simplistic review, he exaggerates the shortfalls of the game to the point of reducing Castlevania 2 to utter rubbish. This depiction has led to fanboys who haven’t even played the title to label it one of the worst games ever. Contrary to said review, Castlevania 2 has a lot to offer: A free-roaming world to explore instead of the linear levels seen in the 1st and 3rd entries, RPG elements such as character levels, buyable items and weapons, and a night/day system that had the player facing harder enemies at night. The exploration factor of Castlevania 2 nudges it barely above Castlevania 3, a fantastic game in it’s own right.

7. Metroid (1987) -
Samus Aran’s first quest is a memorable one, up until the very end (Though it’s common knowledge today that Samus is a woman, players could only find this out be receiving the best 3 of the 5 available endings, when Samus would remove her helmet, revealing to the player that the character they’ve been kicking ass as is a WOMAN!). Metroid featured a free-roaming world and a bevy of power-ups, including the missile, energy tanks, and the morph ball, which allowed you to curl up into a ball that could reach smaller areas that were previously inaccessible. Progress in the game stems from the discovery of new items and weapons that will allow you to access new areas as you traverse the planet Zebes, fighting off space pirates in an effort to reach and destroy Mother Brain, the force behind the Space Pirates and their fortress.

6. Contra (1988) -
One of the first games to utilize cooperative gameplay with 2nd player with success, Contra is a blast to play with a friend as you annihilate humans, machines, and aliens alike while trying to keep up with each other through the levels. The best feature of Contra is the arsenal of weapons that you can find floating in the air in the form of capsules that you can shoot down. While one weapon is just a rapid-firing version of the original gun, the best weapon in the game, the appropriately named spread gun, allows you to fire 5 shots at a time that travel at different angles, giving you the ability to take out multiple enemies on the screen at once. With tons of enemies, one-hit kills, no saving, and the fact you lose your powered up weapon when you do die (which you’ll do a lot of), this is easily one of the hardest games on the NES, and the difficulty seemingly increases with the addition of a 2nd player, most notably in the vertical levels, where traveling too far above your ally would cause him to fall off the bottom of the screen and die.

5. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! (1987) -
How the mighty have fallen. In the late 80’s, heavyweight pugilist Mike Tyson had his own video game, and now all he’s known for is biting a guy’s ear off and getting a freaky face tattoo. Though the game is named after Tyson, the titular character is actually the boss of the game, and the player controls Little Mac as he rises through the boxing ranks until he’s good enough to face Kid Dynamite himself. With a simple, yet very satisfying control scheme, you dodge enemy attacks while waiting for an opening to pummel your opponent. In the beginning, the opponents don’t cover up much, and seldom make you pay for throwing sloppy punches, but as the game goes on, it gets harder, leading up to the final fight with the biggest freak in the game. Not only is his defense nearly impeccable, but Tyson’s uppercut is barely telegraphed and will knock Little Mac on his little butt no matter how much health you have left. The worst part? That’s the only punch he throws for the entire first half of round 1. Surviving that minute and a half is quite the task, but your work is only partway done if you can survive that long, you still have to KO the king, as it’s virtually impossible to win a decision against him.

4. Bubble Bobble (1988) -
While Bubble Bobble might turn potential players off with its simplistic gameplay and style, it’s a horribly addicting affair that has you trapping your enemies in bubbles and popping them to their death and transforming them into fruit. 100 levels not including a special set of levels that can be accessed by a secret door on level 99, a really hard final boss, and a 2nd campaign that you can access after completing the game, and there’s a lot of fun to be had with Bubble Bobble. One of the most satisfying cooperative styles of gameplay rounds this title off as one of the best games to ever hit the NES (and literally dozens of other systems as this is one of the most ported games ever).

3. Mega Man 2 (1989) -
The best-selling Mega Man title, Mega Man 2 took every thing the original Mega Man did well and made it better. 8 bosses instead of 6; introduction of the E-tank, which would become the ultimate health icon of the series; new items that would eventually give rise to Mega Man’s dog companion, Rush, in future titles; the teleport room, where you fought the 8 stage bosses over again in the order of your choice; and most importantly, the password system that ensured that you wouldn’t have to beat the game in one sitting. Mega Man 2 features one of the best soundtracks on the NES and is generally regarded as the marquee title of the series.

2. The Legend of Zelda (1987) -
The first of many adventures for our hero in the green cap, The Legend of Zelda follows Link through his conquest to find the 8 shards of the Triforce of Wisdom before the mighty Ganon can, and his effort to infiltrate Ganon’s lair to free Princess Zelda. A revolutionary game on many fronts, The Legend of Zelda introduced or expanded on many key features. This was one of the first titles that would allow you to save your progress so you wouldn’t have to start your whole quest over after turning off your NES (just remember to hold down that reset button when you turn it off!). After you beat the game, you unlocked a second quest that was completely different than the first, increasing replay value by a lot. The ability to switch your secondary weapon as needed opened up a lot of possibilities. The game polished many features that would eventually become mainstays in role playing titles: Collecting money to buy new items, a sword that grows in power as the game goes on, the ability to increase the maximum amount of health you have, as well as others.

1. Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990) -
The pinnacle of gaming on the NES, Super Mario Bros. 3 has players guiding everyone’s favorite plumber through 8 unique worlds in a quest to free the princess from the clutches of the evil King Bowser. Not only was the level design better than the original Super Mario Bros., but Mario 3 also introduced some revolutionary power-ups that forever changed the franchise, most importantly, the leaf, which turned ordinary Mario into “Raccoon Mario” with the ability to fly for a short amount of time using his tail after getting a running start. Almost every game in the series since has seen Mario flying in some capacity. Other notable items are the warp whistle, which allowed you skip worlds to get to Bowser faster, the Frog Suit, which turned Mario into a master swimmer, and the Tanooki Suit, which allowed Mario all the benefits of the Racoon Suit, but also gave him the ability to turn into an invincible statue while enemies walk right by.

(Honorable Mentions: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Battletoads, Castlevania 3)

You may or may not have seen it coming, but finding out your character Revan was a bad guy added a great element to the classic Knights of the Old Republic Game.

Revan and Malak, who were both strong in the Force, confronted the invading Mandalorians against the Jedi Council’s wishes. Joined by other rebellious Jedi Knights, Revan’s leadership allowed the Republic to drive off the Mandalorians. During the war, Revan learned of the hidden Sith Empire and realized that only a military government led by someone who understood the Sith would be able to repel them. Thus, Revan renamed himself Darth Revan and ordered the use of devastating mass shadow generators to destroy the remnants of the Mandalorian fleet so he could concentrate on the Sith threat.

Video game cover art is designed to attract the consumer towards purchasing the game. With this in mind we ask the question of what were they thinking when they released these strange video game covers? They range from older Atari games to even new games on the Nintendo Wii or DS.

Pac Man (Atari)
Since when does Pacman have legs? And wouldn’t all that running make his legs a little less noodley?

Mega Man (Nintendo)
Mega Man has massive bowlegs, yet we’ve never seen him ride a horse. I think they were going for a Tron feel here.

Donkey Kong (Atari)
Dunno what the weirdest part about this picture is, Mario’s Superman costume, his wicked mullet and sideburns, the absence of his cap, or those friggin fangs on Donkey Kong….If he has those things, why does he have to resort to barrel-chucking?

Dig Dug (Atari)
That’s right, dragon guy, Dig Dug is gonna blow up your manhood next.

Note to models: I think you’re supposed to be looking at the “game” and getting excited, not the camera.

Strider (Sega)
You are no match for my purple pants and my vibrating sword!
